Performed by Duke Ellington in 1936, this is a fun chord melody. Like the name implies, it has that Hollywood Arabic style with a catchy, haunting melody. Because of its chromatic phases it’s not as difficult to play as it sounds. A must for all jazz guitarists, so here's your chance to master it with this 4 lesson set.
In the chord melody, the A section of the song is built around an altered dominant sound which builds tension and gives an improviser lots of time to develop their altered dominant jazz lines.
Rich's simple solo focuses on using diminished scales and arpeggios in 2 and 4 bars phrases. Because the solo echoes these phrases the solo is easier to learn and helps you with ideas for developing your own solo.
Then in the crafted solo, Rich uses many sequences and ideas within the diminished scale for the first 12 bars of the A section. The B section then adds some borderline western swing type licks.
The comping offers the concept of harmonizing the diminished scale as a foundation for soloists. By showing you eight inversions of a diminished chord you'll have plenty of material to keep your comping interesting throughout the tune. The diminished concept occurs in the 12 bars of the tune and of course Rich shows you voicings for the remaining 4 bars of the A sections as well as the bridge.
